Sea kayaking has become increasingly popular in Cape Town over the past few years, leading to the emergence of many new kayak companies in the area. However, not all of them are reputable and experienced enough to provide a safe and enjoyable experience. So, how do you choose the right one to go kayaking with?
To help you make an informed decision, here are some guidelines to follow when choosing a sea kayaking company:
- Do your research before booking.
Don’t just rely on social media ads and flashy promotions. Take a moment to Google the company and read their reviews to determine their reputation and legitimacy. Be cautious of companies that have changed their name to escape previous negative reviews. Look for a company with a lot of positive reviews over a long period, as it may indicate that they are a reliable choice. However, keep in mind that new companies may work harder to build their business and get good reviews.
- Check if the company adheres to industry regulations and guidelines.
It’s essential to choose a company that follows industry regulations and requirements to ensure your safety. Ask the company if they have a valid South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) certificate, are registered with the African Paddling Association (APA) for sea kayaking, and if their guides are experienced and qualified as APA Sea Kayaking guides.
- Determine if the advertised experience matches reality.
Don’t be swayed by flashy advertising that promises amazing wildlife sightings. Ask the company what the chances are of seeing the advertised wildlife on the trip you are booking. For example, whale sightings are rare and only occur a few days of the year. Manage your expectations accordingly to avoid disappointment.
- Consider the company’s track record.
While it’s possible to have a good experience with a bad company on a good day, it’s reassuring to know that the company you choose will take care of you on a bad day. Look for a company with SAMSA inspected equipment, qualified and experienced guides who know how to handle emergencies, and adequate staff-to-customer ratios to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort:
- It’s reassuring to have enough guides on the trip, so when you get sea sick, a guide can paddle back to shore with you, and you won’t have to paddle on your own.
- Knowing that the company will take care of you in case of a kayak capsizing or the group getting blown out to sea by a sudden strong South Easter wind is comforting.
- Pay attention to weather conditions.
Cape Town is known for its unpredictable weather, which can change quickly and dramatically. If no other kayak companies in the same area are offering trips on a particular day, it’s likely because the sea conditions are forecasted to be unsafe. Avoid companies that are willing to offer trips in these conditions.
By following these guidelines, you’ll be able to choose a reputable and experienced sea kayaking company in Cape Town, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.
